Custom Outdoor Living Spaces for Homeowners in Gray, GA

If you've lived in Gray for a while, you've watched it grow. Back in 2000 there were about 1,800 people in town. Ten years later it was closer to 3,300, and it hasn't slowed down much since. Drive up 129 or out Highway 18 and you'll pass whole neighborhoods sitting where there used to be pasture. Families moved here for the schools, the bigger yards and the easy drive into Macon. What many of them got with their new house was a small, basic deck off the back door. Nice enough for a grill and two chairs. Not so nice for a birthday party, a Friday night ballgame watch party, or a summer evening when the whole family wants to be outside.

That's where Archadeck of Central Georgia comes in. We design and build custom decks, porches, screened porches, patios, sunrooms and more outdoor living spaces for homeowners in Gray and across Jones County. Our office is in Macon, just 14 miles down the road, so Gray is right in our backyard.

A Small Town With Deep Roots

Here's a little trivia for your next cookout. Gray got its name from James M. Gray, who owned a good chunk of the farmland around here in the 1850s. Clinton held onto the county seat for almost a hundred years, but by the early 1900s most of Jones County's people lived closer to Gray. In 1905 they voted to move the courthouse. It wasn't much of a contest, either. The final count was 1,289 to 51. Gray became an official town in 1911, and the courthouse is still right there in the middle of it all.

Today, Gray still has that small town feel. People know each other at the ball fields and the grocery store, and the Daylily Festival brings folks out every year. Homes here range from older farmhouses on a few acres to newer builds in neighborhoods off Highway 18 and Highway 22. Each one comes with its own set of opportunities for outdoor living.

What We Hear From Gray Homeowners

After years of working in Jones County, we notice the same few requests come up repeatedly.

"Our deck is too small." This might be the most common one. Builder decks are often sized to meet the minimum, not to fit a family. We can expand an existing deck when the structure is sound or tear it out and design something that works for how you live. We once helped a Gray family trade a cramped deck for a much larger one, and they told us it changed how often they used their backyard.

"We can't sit outside in the summer." Central Georgia heat and bugs are no joke. A covered porch or a screened porch with a ceiling fan turns a hot, buggy yard into a place you'll want to spend your evenings. We also build pergolas for homeowners who want shade over a deck or patio without a solid roof.

"We're tired of staining every year." We get it. Between work, ball practice and everything else, nobody in Gray wants to spend a Saturday on their knees with a stain brush. Our answer is usually redecking. We leave your good framing right where it is and put new composite or PVC boards on top, most often TimberTech, AZEK or Fiberon. No splinters, no rot, and that old stain can goes in the yard sale. We did just that for a wraparound deck in Jones County a few years back.

"We want a place for everyone to gather." Bigger lots in Gray give you room to spread out. A deck that steps down to a stone patio, an outdoor kitchen next to the grill area, and a fire pit or outdoor fireplace nearby can turn a plain backyard into the spot where friends and family end up every weekend.

Building for Jones County Conditions

Every area has its own challenges, and Gray is no different.

Much of Jones County sits on Georgia red clay. Clay holds water after heavy rain and shifts as it dries out, which matters a great deal when you're setting footings. We dig them to the proper depth and size, so your deck or porch stays solid and level for years to come.

Many lots around Gray are wooded, especially once you get outside of town. Trees are great for shade, but they also drop leaves and pine straw that trap moisture on deck boards. That's one more reason so many of our clients here pick low maintenance materials.

And then there's the Georgia summer. Afternoon storms roll through, the humidity sits heavy, and the sun beats down on south and west facing yards. We think about where the shade falls at different times of day when we lay out a design, so your new space is comfortable when you want to use it.

Why Gray Families Choose Archadeck

Archadeck has been designing and building outdoor living spaces since 1980, but what matters most to our clients is who shows up at their house. Our team lives and works in Central Georgia. We know the permitting process with the City of Gray and Jones County, and we take care of permits and inspections for you. If your neighborhood has an HOA, we'll help prepare the drawings and paperwork they need to see.

Every project is custom. We don't pull a plan off the shelf. We come out, look at your home, your yard and the way the land slopes, and design something that fits both the house and the people living in it. Our crews respect your property while they work, clean up when they're done, and every build is backed by Archadeck's warranty.

Questions We Often Get From Gray Homeowners:

Can you add onto the deck we already have? Often, yes. We'll inspect the framing, footings and ledger board first. If everything checks out, an expansion can save you money. If it doesn't, we'll explain why a new build makes more sense.

Do I need a permit for a deck or porch in Gray? Most decks, porches and covered structures require a permit. Whether it goes through the City of Gray or Jones County depends on where your home is located, and we handle that process for you.

How long before we can use it? A regular deck usually takes us a week or two once we're on site. Screened porches, sunrooms and bigger combo projects take longer. The permit is the wild card. Some come back fast and some don't, so we'll tell you what we're seeing at the time before we ever set a start date.

We have an open deck. Could it become a screened porch? Sometimes. A deck should be built strong enough to carry a roof, so we'll check the structure and let you know what's possible. In many cases, we can reinforce what's there or build a new porch in the same spot.

What's this going to cost? We can't give you a fair number until we've seen the yard. A 12 X 16 deck in pressure treated pine and a two-level composite deck with a pergola are two very different price tags. After your consultation, we'll write it all out for you, line by line, so there aren't any surprises. We also offer financing options for homeowners who want to spread out payments.
