Designing the Patio that Meets Your Family’s Needs

We predict that this sweet covered patio will quickly become the family’s favorite room “in” the house. It probably already has! How many people can say, “my favorite room in the house is outside”? That’s exactly what this Wylie TX covered patio is—an outdoor room. You can tell by the way it’s furnished that the family will enjoy this room like they would an indoor den or living room. That’s exactly what they wanted: an outdoor living room where they can relax and enjoy fresh air while protected from rain and direct sunlight.

To create this protected outdoor space, we extended the home’s roofline beyond the existing covered patio area. The dimensions of the expanded outdoor living area are based on how the family plans to use the space. It’s bigger but not too big, just right for relaxing, reading and visiting with family and friends.

The Outdoor Living Builder Who Collaborates with You

Designing this backyard covered patio in collaboration with our clients is how we made sure the design would meet their needs. In addition to spatial requirements, this included all of the design details. Not only did we want to create an immensely livable outdoor space, we also made sure the new construction blended with the home. The new covered patio is entirely custom designed and built specifically for this home.

We extended the concrete patio floor to match the roof extension in size. Then we applied a stain and stamp overlay to the entire patio surface, unifying the original patio area and the new portion. Take a close look, because this patio floor is a work of art. The clients chose a stamp in the pattern of wooden boards with a 12" border and the stain color is winter grey with a charcoal release. Gorgeous!

Next, look up! For the ceiling of this covered porch, the homeowners chose tongue and groove wood construction. It’s a beautiful selection and contributes to the refined, “finished” look and feel of this outdoor room. To make the old and new areas cohesive, we replaced the original Hardie board ceiling with the same tongue and groove wood in the new section. Creature comforts built into the ceiling include four recessed can lights and a ceiling fan. No Wylie TX covered porch or patio would be complete without a ceiling fan!

Not all ground-level covered patios are bordered with railings and pickets, but the custom railings we added here give this outdoor room a picturesque air. This could easily be a front porch—it’s that inviting! We built the porch railings with cedar and painted them light gray, along with the posts and other trim work, to blend with the home.
