Building a deck is not as simple as it used to be. With advances in engineering and design, and improvements in synthetic decking, there is now a wide variety of material options to choose from. Choosing your decking material and color is the first decision, but there are many more. You must choose the size and shape of the deck, location of the stairs and the railing type and color. Dallas-Southlake Low-Maintenance Deck Builder

Low-maintenance decking such as AZEK, Trex and Timbertech, will never have to be stained or sealed, but it will need occasional cleaning. Solid PVC and composite decking won’t split, crack or warp. Aside from being easy to care for and maintain, design versatility is a huge advantage of synthetic decking. For instance, synthetic decking can be bent and molded for stunning curved picture framing, winding inlays, intricate patterns and creating designs throughout your deck. Wooden decks remain the traditional choice for deck building. Wood is still a beautiful and sturdy choice. We offer select-grade pressure treated Pine for wooden deck projects. We also offer Ipe and Cedar along with other upscale hardwoods for our deck designs.

Wood decks do require regular maintenance with stain or sealant. Depending on your property, if your deck is exposed to full sun most of the day or is under the cover of a heavily wooded lot, you may need more or less maintenance.

Your new deck design doesn’t end with choosing the type of decking you’d like either. Customizing your deck means big design decisions in staircase position and style, railing color & type, skirting and custom design additions. Add traditional lattice skirting to your elevated deck to hide the underside. Choose a wide fanning staircase that opens to your large backyard or create two smaller staircases on each side for easy access to multiple areas on your property. Decks and Pergolas: A Combination Worth Considering

We hear this a lot: someone comes in wanting a deck, and by the time we've talked through how they picture using it, a pergola has somehow become part of the conversation. It usually happens right around the point where we mention what 2pm in July feels like on bare decking with zero shade.

A pergola over part of a new deck gives you filtered light, a defined spot for the table or the seating group, and honestly just a more finished look to the whole structure, without turning the project into a full covered porch. You still get sun when you want it, since most homeowners only shade the section, they'll sit in and leave the rest open. A shade pergola is also an option for those that seek more protection from the Texas sun.

There's more than one way to build it too. Sometimes we tie the pergola posts straight into the deck's framing, which gives a cleaner, built in feel. Other times the posts get set independently, which leaves more room to expand the deck down the road if that's ever on the table. Which way makes sense really depends on your layout, and sometimes on what the local code requires.

Cedar's still the material most people gravitate toward for the pergola itself, and it looks good next to both wood decking and composite. If a pergola wasn't in your original plan, bring it up anyway during your consultation. More often than not, it fits into a design you've already fallen for without much rework.
