Archadeck of Columbus Recommends: New Homeowner, New Era, New Deck!

What better way to make your imprint on a home than by ripping out an old, worn deck and replacing it with a beautiful, new one!

A new owner, upon purchasing an older home, wants décor that’s fresh, not well-worn and showing its age. That goes for exterior as well as interior décor! Often the seller will leave an old deck for the new homeowner to replace, assuming the new owner will want to select their decking materials and style.

Such was the case with this home in the city of Columbus, OH. When our client purchased the home, it included a deck that was 15-20 years old and more than ready for replacement. To say it had seen better days was an understatement. The deck’s surface, railing, and stairs were all showing their age. The supporting sub-structure was no longer sound and wasn’t capable of supporting a new surface, so re-decking was not an option here.

The new homeowner called upon premier deck builder Archadeck of Columbus to swoop in and revitalize their outdoor living area by replacing the old deck.

New Deck Provides Opportunity to Make All Kinds of Changes

Replacing a deck means so much more than simply replicating what was there. Once we remove the old structure, we start fresh! The new homeowner has the chance to design their new deck from scratch with whatever materials they choose. They can also request a different size or shape for the new structure. For this project, the client chose a similar shape and size. The new deck is just a little bigger than the previous one.

The client chose to replace the wood deck with low-maintenance composite decking from the TimberTech PRO Terrain collection in the brown oak color. Looking at the two brown decks invites comparison in two ways. First, you inevitably compare the new deck with the old one and recognize how much better the new one looks. In addition to that, you are comparing a completely faded deck with one that will hardly fade at all. TimberTech PRO Terrain decking comes with a 30-Year Fade & Stain warranty. Even after 30 years, the new composite deck will still look better than the prior deck did after 15-20 years, and with very little maintenance.

New Deck, New Railings, New Style

As an established designer of Columbus OH outdoor living spaces, Archadeck of Columbus does more than build your new deck. We work with you during the design phase of your project to show you the range of materials available so you can make your own selections. Your deck will reflect your sense of style and your preferences.

Custom backyard wood deck with railing

For their low-maintenance deck, these clients chose a low-maintenance railing system of black, powder-coated aluminum from Preferred Aluminum Railing’s Georgian series. This durable railing features a sleek style, textured finish, and ergonomic top rail. The balusters are thinner than the old wooden ones and allow a clean, unobstructed view of the yard.

The new deck has a more modern aesthetic thanks to the sleek, new railing system and the wider expanse of the new steps. While the old deck featured two levels – the dining area was a step higher than the section for grilling and lounging – the new deck surface is all one level.

Finally, the homeowner wanted to open up the space around the deck and asked us to remove the arborvitae shrubs on either side of it. The shrubs had grown so big they gave the deck a closed-in feeling.

The new owner of this Columbus, OH, home is enjoying their new deck immensely. The old deck didn’t just fade, it has faded from memory. Its low-maintenance replacement will see this family through many years of outdoor living enjoyment.
