Sometimes a tired, aging wooden deck just needs to be RE-tired, as in “retired,” as in replaced by a patio. That was the case for these Dublin, OH, homeowners who decided to go with a fresh, new paver patio and hardscape from Archadeck of Columbus instead of redecking or having a new deck installed. They also upgraded their screened porch by turning it into a 3-season room. Their instincts were good. Look how this stunning patio and 3-season room combination space has brought new life to their back yard!
Take a look at this total backyard transformation in this video highlighting the project, featured on our You Tube channel:
A Porch for All Seasons
To revitalize their screened porch, Columbus-area porch builder Archadeck of Columbus rebuilt the entire porch façade in Hardie boards and Fypon trim. Doesn’t it look sharp? The white contrasting trim around the windows gives the whole structure a lift.
Speaking of windows, we replaced the clients’ porch screens with an EZE Breeze porch window system so they can always choose between windows or screens depending on the weather. What they have now is a Columbus OH 3-season room. In cooler weather, the windows close completely, making the porch more like a sunroom. In warmer weather, the homeowners can enjoy fresh air and a breeze by sliding the windows open to reveal screens. In each section of four window panels, they can open three panels at any one time, so 75% of the windows can open at once. The homeowners also have the option of removing the window panels entirely, leaving only screens—until they need those windows again.
While our clients will appreciate the EZE Breeze porch features year round, pollen season will be especially delightful next spring. By leaving the window panels closed during pollen season, the homeowners will never have to deal with that nasty yellow stuff invading their porch again. The windows are made of strong vinyl that’s clear so the family won’t lose any of their view from the porch.
In our porch transformation, we didn’t stop with the façade and the windows! We removed the original porch floor, rebuilt the substructure and installed a beautiful ceramic tile floor. For all practical purposes, it really is a new porch, and one the clients can enjoy all during the year.
A Patio for the Ages
When you look at this amazing paver patio, you may be thinking about how attractive it looks. With contrasting dark and light pavers along the curved edges, it is actually quite pretty. What you’re also looking at, whether you realize it or not, is a low-maintenance surface. That’s right, these homeowners traded in their maintenance-intensive wood deck for a low-maintenance paver patio. To keep it clean, all they will need to do is hose it off occasionally or wash it with a mild solution of dish soap and water.
We love the combination of paver colors the clients selected for their Unilock patio and hardscape. The field of the patio features Unilock’s Beacon Hill Flagstone pavers in the platinum color, and the darker soldier course features Unilock’s Series 3000 pavers in black granite. We built the outer edge of the patio with Unilock’s Ledgestone.
The fire pit and all vertical hardscape surfaces were built using Unilock’s Rivercrest Wall, including the semi-circular seating wall and the pillars at each end of it. Rivercrest Wall features the character of stacked flagstone and matches the Beacon Hill Flagstone pavers perfectly. The capped surfaces of the seating wall and pillars are made with Unilock’s Ledgestone.
The homeowners selected a gas-burning fire pit and added lava rock and a gas log set. We predict many cozy evenings with friends and family gathered around this fire pit. The seating wall will allow them to accommodate more guests than the space would otherwise hold.
