A Backyard Built for Every Season in Heath, TX

Anyone who’s lived near Heath TX knows the deal. Spring is gorgeous, summer is brutal, and winter can’t make up its mind. These homeowners were tired of planning their backyard time around the forecast. They wanted a room they could cook in, host in, and use in January and August alike. And they had one firm rule: it had to look like it came with the house. Not an add-on look. No mismatched materials.

That’s when they called Archadeck of Northeast Dallas. Our designer walked the property with them and talked through how they wanted to live in the space. From there, we built a custom design with an exact price quote before a single paver was laid, or board was nailed.

It’s the same Consult, Design, Build process we follow on every project. No guesswork, no surprises, and one team from first sketch to final walkthrough. And that’s exactly what our team built. A custom four-season room with a full gas grill island, specialty venting, brick that matches the original home, a stunning shiplap interior, a custom paver patio and an outdoor gas fire pit.

Here’s how it came together…

The Brick Hunt: Matching What Was Already There

We’ll be honest. This was the hardest part of the whole job.

Brick colors change from batch to batch, and lines get discontinued all the time. The brick on this home had been in place for years, weathering under the Texas sun. Finding a brick that sat right next to and matched, took real legwork.

Morning light and late-afternoon light tell you very different things about a brick. We didn’t settle until we found the match we’d be proud to put our name on.

This is where choosing Archadeck paid off. As North America’s largest deck and porch builder, we have relationships with premium material suppliers that a typical local contractor doesn’t, which gave us more sources.

The payoff is the part you don’t notice. When you look at the house now, your eye doesn’t stop where the old wall ends and the new room begins. That’s exactly the goal – the signature “always been there appeal” of an Archadeck structure.

Inside: Shiplap-Style HardiePlank Walls

Here’s a detail people love once they step inside. We brought the HardiePlank in and hung it shiplap-style on the walls.

The homeowners wanted a farmhouse look that didn’t feel dated, and the long boards nailed it. They make the room look wider, too. There was a practical reason as well. This room has a grill in it and sees humidity swings between seasons. Drywall and wood paneling don’t love that. Fiber cement siding doesn’t care.

Look up and there’s a vaulted ceiling. Look down and it’s wide-plank wood-look flooring. One wall used to be the outside of the house. We kept that brick, and it’s one of our favorite details in the room. Then there’s the glass: sliding doors and tall windows facing the patio and fire pit.

Trying to decide between a sunroom and a 3-season porch? This is the stuff we’ll sit down and talk through with you. Size, color, materials. It mostly comes down to how you’ll actually use the room.

The Island Kitchen Area

This isn’t a portable grill parked in the corner. It’s a custom built-in cooking station designed into the room from day one.

The island measures five by seven feet, which gives plenty of prep space and room for guests to gather around while the cook works. We ran plumbing and a gas line to it. Nobody’s carrying water out from the kitchen, and nobody’s running to the store for propane halfway through dinner.

The grill is a built-in ProFire, dropped into a thick Lueder stone countertop. We wrapped the base in the same whitewashed brick as the wall and added stainless drawers and a door for storage. There are outlets on the backsplash too. Handy for a light or a warming tray.

Gas Grill With Specialty Venting

Cooking under a roof takes careful planning. Smoke and heat need somewhere to go, or the room gets uncomfortable fast.

We installed a stainless steel vent hood with specialty venting designed for this setup. It pulls smoke and heat up and out through the back, keeping the air clear while the grill is going. That means the homeowners can sear steaks in December with the windows closed with nobody’s eyes watering.

Step Outside: An Outdoor Gas Fire Pit

When dinner’s done, the evening doesn’t have to be. Just outside the room, we built a rectangular gas fire pit from natural stone, topped with a smooth Lueder stone cap. It gets breezy out here, so there’s a glass wind guard around the burner. The blue fire glass was the homeowners’ pick. It looks good even with the fire off.

Why gas? No wood to stack. Nobody goes to bed smelling like smoke. It lights with a key and shuts off the second you’re done, so there’s no babysitting embers at midnight.

And, now they’ve got two spots. They cook and eat inside the room, then head out to the fire once the sun goes down.

Fire pits and fireplaces rank near the top of the wish list for homeowners we work with across Rockwall County. See more of our fire features for inspiration.

Natural Light and a Solid Foundation

Energy-Efficient Windows

A room full of glass is great until July. We wanted lots of light without building a greenhouse, so we put energy-efficient windows all the way to the brick mould. They bring the daylight in and help the room hold its temperature, summer or winter. The homeowners should notice it on their electric bill.

Belgard 12-Inch Dimensional Pavers

Out on the patio, we installed 12-inch dimensional pavers from Belgard, finished with a charcoal solider course border. Compared to a plain slab concrete patio, they’ve got real texture. They also hold up to patio furniture getting dragged around, too.

The pavers run right up to the room’s sliding doors. Walk out of the room and you’re already on the patio, a few steps from the fire.

We curved the edge of the patio around new beds with flowering shrubs, mulch and edging. It softens all that hardscape and makes the whole backyard feel finished. Our team also offers softscapes to round out projects like this one.
