There was a time when wood decks were built to last a lifetime. The problem is, if they were made from pressure-treated lumber – or an eco-friendly composite – all bets are off.
This Powell, Ohio, family faced that same situation and called the team at Archadeck of Columbus to perform a miraculous backyard transformation.
What ensued after meeting for their complimentary design consultation was a total reimagination of the rear landscape. After carefully disassembling and removing the weathered and worn aged deck, the remains were carted away.
The old deck had some serious limitations. You couldn’t use it when the sun was intensely shining or the rain was pouring. There were also no designated gathering or seating areas. And a huge factor in deciding to move forward with the transformation was the ongoing maintenance of the deck that was required. In short, it had grown to become non-functional and disconnected from the backyard landscape.
Once the land was cleared, we installed a stunning stone patio adjacent to the home. Our team designed and built a shed roof patio cover over the new installation with a standing seam metal roof. Compared to what was there previously, this new vision was a sight for sore eyes.
The shed roof patio cover is now supported by two geometric columns which beautifully define and anchor the overhead structure.
At the far right under the patio covered shed roof, we installed a fully integrated, all-purpose outdoor kitchen. The five burner outdoor grill is now the focus feature for dinner specialties on a regular basis. From hots dogs and sausage links to cuts of prime wagyu beef and chicken breasts, you can smell the aroma throughout the yard.
We intentionally designed it to be placed on the right end to create a more even and unobstructed flow between the gathering areas and the cooking station. With this new arrangement, the family now enjoys effortless entertaining with virtually everything within reach.
Electronics galore add creature comforts under the shed roof patio cover
Wanting to use the space virtually all day and night to extend their livable square footage, we outfitted technologies to enhance the time out there.
• A ceiling fan cools this outdoor room on demand.
• For those evenings and seasons when the temperature is less than the family would like, infrared heaters spread glowing warmth and comfort.
• As twilight sets in, recessed can lighting artfully illuminates the interior for evening enjoyment.
Venturing deeper into the back yard, we extended the patio even further into a large round multi-purpose patio platform. The patio extension features a soldier course border giving the outdoor room a clean and uniform appearance. Our patio installers used a creative approach to install the border, laying the pavers in a multi angle design, combining straight and 45-degree angles. As you can see, the aesthetic is strong, well-articulated and absolutely lovely.
To achieve the custom effect, our team used Unilock Brussels Dimensional Stone pavers. The geometrically angled cuts of stone reflect the hues of quarried stone, bringing timeless warmth, elegance and a relaxed appearance to any project.
For the seating walls, we used a double bullnose edge in Limestone color for comfort and strength. The same Unilock product was also used as pillar caps in the installation. Other color choices for the Unilock Brussels Dimensional Stone pavers are Sierra, Granite and Sandstone. All exceptionally beautiful.
To incorporate the texture, look and feel of the new transformation, we also added gravel to their existing garden beds for a cohesive aesthetic.
Embracing the perimeter of the new circuitous patio is a combination retaining and seating wall. Here, we used Unilock again, which is perfect for entertaining large crowds. In the center of the new patio extension, one can now snuggle up around a gas fire pit, perfect for longer evenings.
