Large Paver Patio & Cedar Pergola Meet Clients’ Needs in a Big Way!

When we say Archadeck of Columbus wants to build the outdoor living environments our customers dream of, we mean it! The Delaware, OH, paver patio and pergola project we’re looking at today is the perfect example. These homeowners needed to dream big to transform their outdoor living space from (nothing!) to the elegant and super-functional patio you see here.

If you think the Before and After photos of this project site appear to be from two entirely different universes, you are not alone! When we say these clients only had a builder landing and steps to start with, you may have trouble locating this in the Before photo. To see it, just locate the sliding-glass doors that open to the back yard. There you will see a teeny, tiny wood landing with a railing and stairs. The landing was about 2×2 ft. It was not an outdoor living area; it simply provided a way to exit the home without having to jump down to the ground.

The homeowners wanted a true outdoor living area so they could enjoy the back yard. Specifically, they wanted a large paver patio with a pergola for shade. Now they have an outdoor leisure environment, a place where they can sit outdoors, relax, cook and eat, and entertain guests.

Archadeck is Your Go-To Patio Builder Using Unilock Pavers in Columbus OH

The beauty of this patio, from the patio surface and steps to the walls and pillars, shows why we love working with Unilock products. We designed and built everything you see here with Unilock materials—except the wood pergola, of course. Our clients have always liked the quality, beauty and variety of Unilock pavers. They also appreciate that Unilock’s product lines include the perfect pavers to fit any project budget.

For the patio field and the steps, we used Unilock Boulevard pavers. These large-scale pavers are perfect for a patio of this size, which is 730 sq. ft. The Boulevard pavers feature Unilock’s Enduracolor technology, which prevents the surface colors from fading over time. For the patio border, we used Hollandstone pavers in dark charcoal and Brussels limestone. The two-color border design is actually a double sailor course border. If you want to know more about sailor course and soldier course borders, check out the Why Unilock page on our website and scroll down to the section called “Soldier or sailor?”

For the patio’s vertical hardscape elements, the seating walls and pillars, we used Unilock’s Brussels dimensional block in limestone. We capped the seating walls, pillars and steps with Unilock’s Brussels fullnose coping in dark charcoal.

To put an elegant finishing touch on this patio, we added lighting throughout. Altogether we installed a total of 22 LED lights under the caps of the seating walls and the steps. Patio lighting not only adds a soothing ambiance to your outdoor living space at night, it’s also a safety element. This safety measure is especially important on any multi-level patio wherever there’s a step down.

This Delaware OH Pergola Could be Yours, Too!

How do you like the large cedar pergola over the lower patio? (No, we won’t move it from this client’s property and bring it to your home, but we can build a similar pergola for you!) This super beefy pergola commands attention and frames this section of the patio—similar to the way the seating walls frame the patio’s upper level. This pergola design adds heft to the lower patio and serves to balance the visual impact of the two levels. It also provides shade for the lower level.

The homeowners did not want intermediate posts to interrupt the view and the transition from the patio to the back yard. That meant we needed to span an area over 20 ft. wide at the front and back of the pergola. For this purpose we used glulam beams for the span. Glulam beams are glued laminated timber in which layers of wood alternate with layers of durable, moisture-resistant adhesives for incredibly strong support.

Finally, we wrapped the pergola’s beams and posts in cedar for a rich, beautiful effect. That works as intended, don’t you agree?
