When we design a sunroom, we try to make it look like it was always part of your house. Sometimes customers have an existing porch that they want to convert into a heated and cooled sunroom. This can be faster and more economical than building your room from scratch.
This customer in Forest Acres had a large side porch that didn’t meet their needs. They wanted part of it converted into a sunroom to use as a quiet sitting area. They wanted the remaining porch area rebuilt as a more finished and usable porch on the side of their house.
Their situation was unusual in that they had already torn out the old porch area and were ready to get started with a new design.
We were able to start right away and build out the concrete floors. Nothing structural needed to be done to the roof or the footings, which made this project much more economical than starting from scratch.
Once the concrete floor was ready, we completed the new porch area with railings, a finished ceiling and beautiful tile on the floor. We also created an adjoining sunroom/sitting room as a transition from the porch to the living room.
The new sunroom is an insulated room with lots of windows for light. On the sunroom floor we used tile similar to that of the porch for a smooth transition. The finishes of the sunroom included painted drywall and trim on the inside to match the interior of their other rooms. We used new brick on the exterior to match the home’s existing brick.
We think the finished product, an open porch and sunroom, meets our goal of looking like it belongs to the original home. It certainly meets the customers’ goal of additional useful space. And we think it’s beautiful – we hope you do, too!
