4 Essential Elements for a Great Southern Porch

Archadeck of Charlotte has been designing and building custom porches in the Charlotte NC area for over 30 years. We have built many front porches, open porches, and screened porches – large, small, traditional, and modern, but there are a few mainstays for all porches in the South.

Living in and around the beautiful Queen City, you have likely seen firsthand the porches of old on some of our aged and historic homes. If you enjoy a weekend getaway in Charleston or Savannah, you too, have relished the splendors of the past, beholding the beautiful southern porches in their historic districts. If you would like for your porch to echo those of times past, we can offer a few recommendations to achieving the desired aesthetic and function.

1. A great southern porch has lots of seating

Gathering with family, friends, and neighbors happen spontaneously in the South. An afternoon porch pow-wow is a welcome break to a lazy Saturday at home! With this in mind, it is essential to see to it that your Charlotte porch has great seating accommodations. Southern porches can accommodate a crowd at a moment’s notice with rocking chairs, porch swings, benches, or lounge chairs. Add comfortable cushions, so your guests can “sit a spell.”

2. Southern porches are better with ceiling fans

When the ice-cold sweet tea can’t keep you cool, rely on southern breezes, aided by ceiling fans! Ceiling fans are no happy accidents when it comes to staying comfortable on your Charlotte porch! As anyone, who has spent ample time on a porch in the heat of summer, will tell you that ceiling fans are a true southern porch necessity. From a designer standpoint, they add character and can keep with your overall porch design theme, as well. Ceiling fans are great for all warm weather months – morning, noon, and night!

3. Southern porches should have great lighting

While we all know and love those porch lights of old, they might not always be possible for our porches of today. That doesn’t stop you from having great lighting with tons of character. There are a multitude of designer porch lighting options today – and some even mimic gas lanterns with LED flame effects. Bring your love for lovely lighting fixtures inside your home, out onto your porch for beauty and function!

4. Bring your favorite plants onto your southern porch

It doesn’t matter the arrangement – colorful seasonal flowers and lush greenery make porches more beautiful and more enjoyable. Fragrant herbs, live succulent walls, hanging baskets, fresh-cut arrangements, and potted floor and table plants should all be welcome on your Charlotte porch! The sight and smell of flowers enliven your porch and help to create a lively place for entertaining, or a serene space for private relaxation. Roses, lavender, gardenias, lemon verbena…ahhhhh!
