This Columbia Screened Porch And Deck Combination Proves That When It Comes To Outdoor Living Spaces, Bigger Is Often Better

When it comes to outdoor remodeling projects, having more space is a top priority for many homeowners. For those looking to improve an existing porch or deck, it is only natural to want more room for the activities we enjoy. After all, have you ever heard someone ask, can you make this deck smaller? – we haven’t!

Among the many benefits of making your outdoor living space(s) bigger, enjoyment is at the top of the list. Other benefits include more room for seating, space for outdoor entertaining, and increased privacy. Of course, adding more square footage, no matter the location of your project, is a smart way to add value to your home.

Deck and Screened Porch Extension and Upgrade

Our most recent project in Columbia, SC, serves as the perfect example of the “bigger is better” philosophy. These clients came to us with an existing screened porch and attached wooden deck they wished to improve upon. The wood deck showed its age. Not only did they crave more space for the deck and porch, they also wanted to update by switching from wood to lower maintenance materials.

Archadeck of Central SC came up with a design upgrade plan for the clients that fulfilled their desire for more room using low-maintenance materials!

extended screen porch

First, we extended the screened porch to a roomy 16 x 15 footprint. This provides more area for seating, dining and overall outdoor living enjoyment. In addition to the space upgrade, we also updated the existing screened porch to an aluminum screened porch to give it a fresh look and feel.

Then we extended the deck out to 31 x 10, which includes a 15 x 2 bump-out area for the homeowners’ grill and smoker. For a cohesive deck design, we redecked the existing deck and porch areas to match the new areas using AZEK low-maintenance decking in Island Oak. The deck features a diagonal decking pattern and a parting board for aesthetics. We installed new deck railing using round aluminum balusters and an AZEK rail cap. We finished off the deck upgrade with gorgeous solid-board skirting.
