See How This Canton, OH Redecking Project Preserved the Pergola and Saved on Costs

Nestled into Jackson Township among deep backyards, grape arbors, and mature landscaping, there was a Canton, OH, homeowner whose aging deck was in need of updates. They were looking for a smart way to upgrade their old deck without starting from scratch.

The shape worked, and the structure underneath was sound. But the surface was worn, and the family needed more room to grill and gather. So, rather than tear everything out, they called us. And we helped them keep what worked—and fix what didn’t.

As seasoned experts in redecking, we gave this space a second life with new composite boards, extended usable surface area, and careful attention to personal touches, not the least of which was protecting an established grapevine that had grown up the pergola.

Below, we’ll walk you through our process.

Redecking Is a Smart Alternative to Starting Over

The original layout was functional. The pergola cast a perfect bit of shade. And the deck had become an essential part of how this family used their outdoor space. What this deck needed was a refresh, not an overhaul.

We started by thoroughly inspecting the substructure to confirm the foundation and joists were in good condition. Once we did that, we took away the old boards and installed new composite decking. An alternative to natural wood, composite is a cost-effective way to extend the lifespan, reduce maintenance, and improve curb appeal on an old (or new) deck.

To protect the underlying frame and prevent long-term water damage, we also applied deck joist tape. This waterproof barrier shields vulnerable screw holes and seams, slowing down rot and preserving the integrity of the deck for years to come.

Why Careful Contractors Make the Best Redecking Partners

Not every builder takes the time to preserve the features that make a space feel lived-in. In this case, there was a beautiful grapevine—a real grapevine!—that had curled around the pergola and gave the space a beautiful visual appeal.

During construction, we carefully supported and preserved the pergola so that it could be returned to its original position without harming the vine. Once the deck was finished, the grapevine was gently coaxed back into place, as if it had never been moved at all.
