Durham Deck Transformed into a Three-Season Room

Durham Deck Enclosed with Eze-Breeze Windows Creates a Luxurious Retreat

One of the top trends in home construction is creating a space that eases the transition between indoor and outdoor living. This was the goal of one Durham family who wanted to enclose their existing deck and transform it into a three-season room. The homeowners wanted a three-season room so they could enjoy their backyard for more of the year. They also wanted to create a space where their family could sit by a cozy fire and watch their favorite TV programs. To meet their design goals, we enclosed their existing deck with an open gable roof and Eze-Breeze porch windows. We also added a large stone fireplace and wired the room for features such as a large TV on the fireplace mantle.

Indoor Comforts with an Outdoor Feel

There are several design elements that help bring together the features of indoor and outdoor living in this three-season room. For one, we used an open gable roof with a vaulted ceiling to achieve a bright and airy feel. The vaulted ceiling was finished in tongue and groove spruce to match the flooring, giving the room a soft, natural look. Recessed lighting brightens the space for everyday use, whereas tray lighting along the ceiling edge helps to create ambiance when twilight sets in.

Windows are another special design feature in this three-season room. Known for their ease of use and durability, Eze-Breeze windows allow the porch to function more like an indoor room when the windows are closed. The closed windows help protect from wind, weather, and pollen. When the windows are closed, and a fire is lit, the room can be used for more time in the late fall, early winter, and early spring. When the windows are open, the family can enjoy breezes flowing through the built-in screens and all the other benefits of a traditional screened porch.

Outdoor fireplaces continue to grow in popularity as a design feature of outdoor living. For this project, we added a large stone fireplace with a 36” Courtyard gas insert so the family can enjoy the look and warmth of the fire with just the flip of a switch. In addition to its functionality, the fireplace was also designed to be a focal point of the room with its gorgeous floor to ceiling Shawnee ledgestone and stunning Buff tread with a rockface edge for both the mantle and the hearth.

To complete this indoor-outdoor transformation, we also re-decked the small deck outside of their utility room door so that the decking and railings match the new stairs and landing for the three-season room. This creates a seamless visual transition across the back of the home.

Durham Re-Decked Side Porch Home Entrance

When we transformed this family’s deck into a three-season room with Eze-Breeze windows. We also redecked the remaining open area of the deck. To match it, the family also had us re-deck the small deck/landing outside of their utility and mudroom to match. We upgraded the rails to black Deckorator rails to allow better views of the yard and give it a more modern feel too!

This expansive three-season room appears that much bigger with the vaulted tongue-and-groove ceiling and open gable roof. To keep the air flowing on warm days, we added two ceiling fans. And for gorgeous nights on the porch, the recessed lighting gives it that indoor feeling.

Spruce Siding to Match Ceiling in Durham Three-Season Room

The same tongue-and-groove spruce used on the vaulted ceiling was also added to the home’s siding within the new three-season room for a cohesive design. This custom design feature replaces the white siding that would have appeared less finished. The small details truly make this Eze-Breeze porch a backyard retreat.
