The design of a project is the most important phase of creating an outdoor living space you will enjoy and be proud of. It’s also an opportunity to see the level of experience, professionalism, and value your builder can bring to the table. The right design should take into account your personal needs and preferences, the use of space regarding furniture, grills, outdoor essentials, etc., the traffic flow of the space, and your appetite for ongoing maintenance. And of course your budget.
If you have past experience with an indoor or outdoor addition or renovation project you may be familiar with how the design phase works. Depending on the proactive nature and level of communication, or lack of, in regards to the builder you previously worked with, you may feel confident during the design phase. However, in many cases, we hear horror stories about past experiences and how what the customer thought they received wasn’t actually the project they had in mind — that is not going to happen with us.
We know what many of you are thinking…the design process is like a box of chocolates, once I sign up for a design retainer, I have no idea what I am actually going to get. At Archadeck of Nashville. this is certainly not the case. We are proud to be a professional outdoor living structure design and build firm, as opposed to much of our competition who are merely focused on getting a project built fast so they can collect and leave.
What sets Archadeck’s process apart from that of every other deck-builder, porch builder, or outdoor living structure company in the Nashville area? If you say it’s our exquisite quality and craftsmanship, you’d be correct! But first and foremost, it is because we differentiate ourselves in another way: through professionalism.
As design/build professionals, Archadeck of Nashville will move forward beyond the initial “consultation meeting”, for which we never charge, to perfect your outdoor living space design. We will then request a retainer in order to prepare a customized 3-D design rendering of your project. Most people assume that their architect, designer, engineer, lawyer, accountant, or other professional will expect payment to engage their services. We ask no less.
What you are first “retaining” is us as professionals. What you will appreciate is that we actually listen to your ideas, concerns, and issues. We really want to hear all about the outdoor living project you have in mind. We listen intently and ask lots and lots of questions, documenting it all as we go and repeat it back to you to make sure we really do understand what it is you want.
— Deck design rendering example
We listen closely and address all your needs and desires while preparing a rendering of your project. Unlike blueprint-style plans, a rendering presents a much more realistic view of your project which enables you to see within the space, not just a one-dimensional view from the front of the layout. Your project specifics may include the addition of a singular deck, a porch, or a combination of outdoor living spaces. No matter the scale of your project, we create a 3-D rendering for each project we design to ensure our vision is the same.

Once the design rendering is prepared we schedule a time to sit down together as a feedback session to make any changes to the rendering. With the retainer, we then give the client a fixed-cost quote for their project. Outside of unforeseen circumstances, that’s what they pay. What the customer pays as a retainer also comes off the final purchase price.
