As experienced deck builders, we are often asked about outdoor living structure definitions or vernacular in our area versus others.
Covering a deck can greatly improve your outdoor living space. This cover obviously provides shade and protection from the elements, which allows homeowners to enjoy their decks in inclement weather. Deck covers can also greatly enhance the aesthetic of your outdoor living space and your home. A deck cover can be referred to a few ways, depending on the type of cover chosen. The following are three typical names for a cover over a deck.

At Archadeck of Greater Denver and the Foothills, pergolas are a popular choice for covering decks. Pergolas are constructed of a framework of structural posts and beams. The roof of a pergola can be open lattice, louvers, or a solid cover, like the Hercules System. Pergolas are often used to create a defined outdoor living area, adding architectural interest and a impressive focal point to boot. Our pergolas can be freestanding or attached to the home and can be customized in size and design to fit varied spaces and aesthetic preferences.

2. Awning
Though we do not install or sell them, awnings are a traditional option for deck covers. Awnings are most typically constructed by an aluminum frame with a weather-resistant fabric cover. Retractable awnings are very popular in today's outdoor living, because they provide flexibility for homeowners. They can choose shade or wide-open outdoor enjoyment on their deck. Awnings are highly effective in providing protection from the sun's rays and can significantly reduce heat on your deck. Awnings can be customized to coordinate your home's exterior, as well as your chosen décor and design aesthetic.

A roof is a premium, permanent option for covering a deck. Like pergolas, roofs can be freestanding structures, or can be attached to your home. Roof covers for decks are very popular in the Greater Denver area, as they are suitable for our varied climate. At Archadeck of Greater Denver and the Foothills, our deck roofs often include upgrades, like skylights and radiant heating. Therefore, our roofs offer a cozier, more protected outdoor living space, allowing our clients to spend as much time as possible on their decks throughout the year.

What is the difference between a covered deck and a covered patio?
The primary differences between covered decks (also called covered porches) and covered patios are in their location and elevation. Our Metro Denver decks are usually elevated, situated just outside of and attached the home. Our paver patios are installed on the ground-level and can be located anywhere in our client's yard; wholly detached or as a part of a larger outdoor combination space. Decks in the Denver Metro often include railings, depending on their elevation. Any deck over 30" in height, must be enclosed with railings. Patios are versatile, quite flexible spaces that can be staged for virtually limitless uses. And while they are often installed just outside the home like decks, they can also be installed in a space farther away from the home to create a quiet nook in the recesses of a property.

Finding a great patio cover contractor in greater Denver starts with knowing where to look and what to ask. Begin with a Google search for local contractors and pay close attention to reviews — not just the star rating, but whether reviewers mention things like clean jobsites, on-time completion, and responsive communication. A contractor with dozens of detailed, location-specific reviews carries far more weight than one with a handful of vague five-star ratings.
Once you have a short list, visit each contractor's website and look for signs of genuine local presence: photos of actual Denver-area projects, specific mentions of Front Range communities, and evidence that they understand Colorado building codes and climate demands. Any contractor can claim to serve Denver — the ones worth hiring can show you proof.
From there, ask each candidate the questions that separate professionals from fly-by-night operators: Do you pull your own permits? Are your crews in-house or subcontracted? Can you provide local references? What does your warranty cover, and who stands behind it? The answers will tell you quickly who takes their work seriously.
Word of mouth remains one of the most reliable filters. Ask neighbors, friends, or your HOA if they've had patio cover work done and who they'd recommend. A contractor with a strong referral network in your specific zip code has earned that reputation one backyard at a time.
Archadeck of Greater Denver consistently rises to the top of this process.
