How to Choose a Permanent Shade Structure for your Raleigh Deck or Patio

Are you using your deck or patio less often than you’d like when the summer sun is blazing? Do your outdoor living areas face west or south, without a lot of tree cover? Do table umbrellas fail to provide the shade relief you need? If so, it may be time to consider a permanent shade structure for your deck or patio.

How much sun protection is enough for your deck or patio? At Archadeck of Raleigh-Durham, we can help you decide whether a solid roof or a louvered pergola is best for your outdoor living space.

Covered Decks and Patios

lattice wall on patioRaleigh deck and patio roofs can offer full protection from the hot Carolina sun and afternoonshowers. Both beautiful and practical, deck and patio roofs come in all shapes and sizes. They are usually attached to the home, providing continuous coverage as you move between your home and the outdoors. Or, if you prefer a pavilion-like feel, roof structures can be free-standing and built further away from the home.

Porch and patio roof options include flat, gable, open gable, hip, shed, or a combination of more than one type. The shape and style you choose depends upon both your preferred aesthetics as well as whether the roof needs to tie into your home. If it does, there may design constraints based on your home’s existing roof line and exterior features.

Solid roofs allow for the addition of many different types of functional and design features. These may include conveniences such as ceiling fans, various types of lighting, and mounted televisions. Upgraded ceiling finishes are also possible, such as the addition of tongue and groove paneling, rustic beams, or specialty painting (such as the coveted blue porch ceiling!). Having a roof also makes it possible to convert the space into a screened-in porch or three-season room, with the addition of screens or vinyl windows that enclose the area and further extends its use.

Pergolas

If you don’t want a fully covered roof, pergolas can offer partial shade with a classic look, and can be built almost anywhere on your Raleigh deck, patio, or property. With a few additions—such as vines, fabrics, and polycarbonate—you can increase their shade and rain protection while still allowing some sunshine to filter through. Pergolas are beloved for their craftsman feel and easy modification. Today’s pergolas can be made with either pressure-treated pine or low-maintenance products. In most cases, they can be painted or styled to complement your home’s aesthetic. Although the options aren’t quite as varied as with a solid roof, pergolas can be wired for electrical accessories such as ceiling fans and lighting. Pergolas are an adaptable, practical, and beautiful addition to any outdoor living area.
