Kyle Faulkner of Archadeck of Raleigh-Durham Demonstrates Two Easy Options for Cleaning a Composite Deck

In the Greater Triangle, spring pollen and winter grime are the two main culprits of a dirty deck. Composite decking materials from TimberTech and AZEK are gaining popularity for their low-maintenance ownership in addition to their long-lasting durability.

Caring for a natural wood deck requires regular staining, painting, or sealing—a process that can eat up an entire weekend or more every year. Composite decking never needs to be stained, painted or sealed. Cleaning can take as little as 10-20 minutes, once or twice annually.

BEFORE YOU START: Always check the care and maintenance recommendations for your specific deck and railing product. Follow the manufacturer’s list of approved cleaners and methods to avoid damaging your deck or railing.

How to Clean a Composite Deck with Detergent and a Brush

Step One: Remove furniture and accessories.

Step Two: Sweep or use a leaf blower to remove large debris.

Step Three: Mix your detergent according to the label.

Step Four: Wet down a small area of the deck.

Step Five: Use a soft-bristled brush and detergent to gently agitate the dirt from the deck and railing surfaces.

Step Six: When satisfied with the area, rinse it. Avoid letting detergent dry on the deck. It could leave a film.
