How To Beautifully Extend An Existing Covered Porch

No secret to the families that live here, Vestavia, Alabama, summers have a humid subtropical climate; and proactive homeowners should be prepared for hot, sticky summers, and lots of sunshine.

During the summer, temperatures often soar to over 90 degrees which can prove to be an obstacle for outdoor living lovers here.

How Can I Beat The Summer Heat In Vestavia?

If you are looking to make a covered porch more comfortable during the warmer months of the year, there are several ways to do it.

1. Plant trees or install a trellis: Planting trees or installing a trellis with climbing plants on the side of the porch can provide some natural overhead protection. This will take longer to provide coverage, but it can be a beautiful and eco-friendly option.

2. Add a pergola: A pergola is a structure with an open roof that consists of rafters and crossbeams. It can provide some overhead protection while still allowing sunlight to filter through.

3. Install a canopy: A canopy is a freestanding structure with a roof that provides more overhead protection. It can be a good option if you want to extend the coverage of the porch without attaching anything to the house.

4. Add a roof extension: You can add a roof extension to the existing porch by attaching it to the main roof of the house. This will provide additional overhead protection and can be done by a contractor such as Archadeck of Birmingham.

When It Comes To Better Outdoor Living, Sometimes More Is More

As this Vestavia family already had that far-reaching roof in place, we improved it by replacing the porch roof supports and built an all new deck structure. To provide the family with more room for outdoor living, we extended the deck forward by a couple of feet during the upgrade process.

A Pressure Treated Porch Cover Solution Was Just The Beginning

While rebuilding the deck, adding more square footage to the porch, and reinforcing the roof supports, we also added a new custom planter at the far right end of the enlarged deck space.

The building material is all pressure treated wood and features bronze powder-coated balusters in the railing.

The finished project is rather majestic looking and sure to provide countless hours of outdoor leisure enjoyment, protected from the sun when desired, and celebrating it on the right side with the newly added extension.
