Deck Safety Inspections in Oakville ON

Did you know that the average deck lasts 10 years? If you have an older deck on your Oakville property, we encourage you to have your deck inspected for any safety concerns. See what we look for in this short video:

During our thorough inspection of your deck, our deck builder will look at all its components, from foundation and footings, to exits and boards. If we see anything that needs to be addressed, we’ll let you know!

Whether you have a deck that’s 5 years old or 25 years old, you may question the integrity of the deck. Perhaps the deck or stairs wobble when you walk on them. Perhaps you see some slight movement in the stairs on a very windy day. Or maybe the boards are splintered and twisted making you doubt the structural integrity of your Oakville area deck.

If you have access or visibility to the under structure of your deck, that area might give you pause or alarm. Are some of the columns twisting or pushing screws or nails to protrude? Does any post seem to have come apart from the footing? Does a concrete footing move when you push on the post? Is there a gap between a post and the deck or stairs? If that’s the case, you certainly want to call a professional deck company to review the issues and determine whether serious structural degradation may cause further degradation or worse yet – a deck failure.

How about your stairs? If you step on any of the stairs, do they have spring in them indicating they may not be properly supported? If you push on the stair rails, is there any give? If you grab on both handrails and try to move side-to-side, do the stairs move? Do you have a reason to believe your stairs might be out of code? Perhaps they’re too narrow or don’t appear to have the correct handrail. A trained deck expert such as Archadeck of the GTA can help you inspect your deck for safety.

Standing atop the deck, do any of the deck boards give when you walk or jump on them? Your deck should be sturdy enough that there is no give when you jump anywhere on the surface of your deck. Are nails protruding from any of the boards? Are some of the boards twisted or cupped or coming loose? How about the railing? Are there wide gaps between some of the spindles or are spindles missing? Does the railing have any give when you try to move it? Every element of your deck should be sound enough that it has no give.
