Gazebos, Pavilions & Pergolas: What’s the Difference?
These three structures are often grouped together, but they serve different purposes and suit different yards. Knowing which one fits your space makes the planning process much easier.
- Pergolas are open structures with crisscrossing beams instead of a roof. They define a space and support climbing plants or draped fabric, but they don’t provide full weather protection.
- Pavilions have a solid roof and are generally square or rectangle-shaped, making them well suited to patios, pool areas, and outdoor kitchens where overhead coverage matters.
- Gazebos also have a roof but are traditionally octagonal. Their distinct shape makes them a natural focal point in a garden or yard.
