At first, the family for whom we crafted this deck and screened porch combination wasn’t quite sure what they were looking for in finally getting a professionally designed and built outdoor living space.
During their free at home design consultation, and carefully listening to what they thought they would like, and how they were planning to use the space, we suggested a two-for-one outdoor project solution – a custom screened porch leading to a new deck.
SOMETIMES MORE IS MORE WHEN IT COMES TO MAXIMIZING OUTDOOR LIVING FUNCTIONALITY AND ENJOYMENT
Yes, our reputation has been built on being the acclaimed Birmingham Wooden Deck Builder, but sometimes we’re more than that. We like to think of it as we’re Birmingham’s outdoor living problem solver.
The family originally wanted a wooden deck, but they were concerned about dealing with occasional weather elements that were not conducive to being totally outdoors. The solution? Design and build a screened porch adjacent to the deck, offering protection when leaving the house to reach the new deck and vice versa.
Now that the project is complete and the family is enjoying it on a daily basis, they shared a story about being on the deck enjoying the early autumn sunshine when all of a sudden clouds appeared along with a brief downpour of cool rain.
Exit, stage left, into the screened porch, allowing them to “stay outside” without becoming drenched victims of the unexpected cloud burst. As soon as it subsided minutes later, the deck furniture was toweled off and they went back to soaking up the returning sunshine.
THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS – THE BEAUTY OF WOOD MEETS DURABLE, PROTECTIVE SCREENING
To compliment the flow and height logistics of the rear of the home, a low-to-grade construction plan was created. This Birmingham screened porch builder chose pressure treated wood, accented with a gabled roof inside the screened porch.
To ease the transition from the deck to the backyard, extended long stairs were built for convenient access.
For continuity of design, this deck and screened porch combination structure features black aluminum balusters in the railing and matching inset (which is one of our signature custom features here in Birmingham) in the screen door bottom as well.
Our client approved our recommendation of solid board vertical skirting along the porch with the same wooden and aluminum baluster railing on the deck.
As always with thoughtful outdoor living space design, this build is all about functionality. As you can see, it is not a huge space, but very effective and in keeping with the scale of the home.
As Goldilocks would say, “It’s just right.”
