Carisbrooke Screened Porch in Hoover, AL, Poised for Future Project

Our clients in the Carisbrooke neighborhood of Hoover, AL, wanted a screened porch. At the same time, they decided to have their deck extended with low maintenance decking. They also plan to have the screened porch converted to a sunroom or three-season room in the future. That’s an excellent way to plan ahead!

You may be wondering why these homeowners decided to go ahead with the screened porch when they already know they’re going to convert it in the future. Good question!

Today’s Screened Porch Can Become Tomorrow’s Sunroom

These Carisbrooke homeowners had a two-part outdoor living area at their home, which is what we call a combination outdoor living space. They had an open, covered porch adjoining a wooden deck. Our clients wanted their deck extended and refreshed with new low-maintenance decking, new steps and railing. Eventually, they also want to convert the porch into a 3-season room or sunroom. They just weren’t ready to take on the entire project at this time.

Working with their Archadeck of Birmingham design consultant, the homeowners arrived at the plan that was perfect for them. They decided to move ahead with converting the open porch into a screened porch and the deck improvements. When they are ready for the final stage of the project, we’ll return and convert the screened porch into a sunroom or three-season room. For now, they can enjoy a screened room and a deck that feels brand new. They can take their time deciding whether they want a sunroom with lots of windows or a three-season room that combines window panels and screens.

By deciding to build in stages, our clients accomplished a couple of things. They are able to enjoy the screened porch and low-maintenance deck now. They learned that “all or nothing” is not the only way to design and build an outdoor living project. At Archadeck of Birmingham, we can design and build a current project with a future addition, expansion or conversion in mind.

We were able to incorporate plans for an enclosed room (that future sunroom or 3-season room) into the design of their screened porch. The next phase of the project will be less disruptive than it might have been had we not understood their long-term plan for the space. The newly screened-in porch, features a new wooden floor and a cedar knee wall that will allow for windows in the future. The homeowners plan to tile the floor when it’s time to add windows in the project’s final stage.

Hoover, AL, Redecking with Low-Maintenance Composite Decking

Our clients chose to replace their pressure-treated wooden deck with low-maintenance TimberTech Brown Oak composite decking. The deck was also extended to allow more outdoor living room as part of this project. We also installed a new railing which features a TimberTech rail cap and pressure-treated combination.
