Are you dreaming of a peaceful space to relax outside and enjoy the lush nature around your home? If your answer is “yes,” this Raleigh covered porch and deck addition is sure to tempt you. The homeowner wanted an outdoor living space that is covered but still feels open to the verdant landscape surrounding their home. Our talented design team and skilled crews at Archadeck of Raleigh-Durham achieved the homeowners’ wishes with this rustic, nature-inspired covered porch and deck, with beautiful cascading stairs and lots of functionality.
Covered Porch Surrounded by Nature
To design an open porch that capitalizes on lots of foliage and wooded scenery, we focused on three main goals. These include: maximizing views, creating the feeling of being immersed in nature, and complementing the landscape and home with the porch’s design elements.
To maximize the gorgeous views from our clients’ home, we created a large open porch featuring a rustic gable roofline and vaulted ceiling. The wide opening facing the yard creates a picture window effect, framing the backyard scenery for those relaxing on the porch. We accented the rails with black Deckorator infill as the slim size and dark color tends to provide a less obstructed view.
Immersed in Nature
The homeowners wanted a space in which they and their guests could feel immersed in nature. To achieve this, we left the porch open without any screens or windows. The open gable adds to this effect as the view of the sky and treetops maximizes that feeling of being in the woods.
We also extended the deck well beyond the porch roof so the homeowners (and their dog!) can enjoy the sunshine whenever they want. Lastly, the wide, flared stairs open the entire space to the backyard for easy traffic flow and enjoyment of the porch, deck, and yard. The cascading stairs also provide extra seating, if needed.
Rustic Design Elements
We used natural materials to help create the rustic aesthetic and enhance the feeling of being immersed in nature. The deck and porch are made with pressure-treated pine decking and the thick wood columns are wrapped in natural stacked stone. The porch roof features a tongue and groove spruce ceiling with faux wood beams and black metal brackets accent the king truss beams and porch posts. The lateral wood skirting hides the unused space under the deck while adding more wood elements to the aesthetic. Inside the porch roof, tray lighting provides warm, ambient light for nighttime use. Finally, cascading rain chains on the corners of the porch roof redirect rainfall to the landscaping adding to the rustic design with stylish functionality.
