NW Austin Project Is The Epitome Of “Go Big Or Go Home” Reborn As “Go Big And Stay Home,” With The Help Of Archadeck

There is an interesting story behind this major backyard transformation.

This family had a concrete patio under an existing wood deck. Due to a lack of air circulation, unfortunately rot had occurred in areas of the deck.

Before – covered deck/porch area.

So our first order of business with this huge renovation was to remove the covered porch area, as well as the existing decks – including the deck next to the master bedroom.

Before – outdoor kitchen area.

Also, our team removed the outdoor kitchen at far right of the lower level and the concrete patio, too, so in essence we started completely fresh.

Well Thought Through And Carefully Planned, This New Combination Space Outdoor Living Structure Checks All The Boxes

Keeping our focus on the backyard first, Archadeck of Austin came in and built a brand new deck on the second story. Protected with a handsome vertical baluster rail system, the new elevated outdoor space at far right allows breathtaking views of the rear landscape and beyond.

To re-engineer the base patio that was removed, our team installed two-by-three Lueder's stone pavers. For foundational strength and longevity, the stone retaining system is on a 6-inch concrete footer system. Not leaving any proverbial stone unturned, everything was built above grade to ensure proper drainage so water wouldn't run through and create excessive moisture in and on the adjacent rear landscape.

Furthermore, our materials selection features cobalt black 1-to-2-inch Texas star stone/rock, also added above grade for better facilitation of rain water runoff.

Lueders Limestone Creates The Foundation For This Circular Backyard Firepit

Due to its solid neutral colors and cost-effectiveness, Austin Limestone has become a staple to several of our designs here. Advocates of getting back to nature, this is a wood burning fire pit instead of gas.

A New Shed Roof Joins The New Design Schema

For the rear open patio porch at far left, to protect the area below from unwanted elements of Mother Nature, we replaced the previously installed flat roof with a vaulted shed roof. As an accompaniment, we also added new resilient Hardie board siding underneath and installed a decorative tongue and groove ceiling, adding richness to upward glances while enjoying the seemingly dancing trees along the periphery.

The support posts were also wrapped in Hardie board for continuity.

Now With The Backyard In Good Stead, It’s Off To The Front Exterior Of The Home For A Re-Engineered Upgrade

Out at the front of the home, we noticed that the front porch was sinking. To remedy that, we replaced it with a new concrete foundation and steps, and also applied the TPC Concrete overlay system there, as well.

TPC Concrete – also known as Trevor Powell Concrete – is a company that specializes in decorative concrete. To its credit, limitless options are only the beginning. They offer multiple different decorative concrete finishes: Stamp, textured, acid stains, vertical stamps, overlays, countertops, and metallic products for outdoor living areas.

These can all be produced with a variety of color palettes and sequences to achieve amazing results. In short, they are the Masters in concrete stamping and finishing.

Let There Be Light When Night Skies Need A Little Luminary Help

Thinking Of Everything, We Even Gave The Garden Hose A New “Home”

To facilitate access to the exterior garden hose, we also designed an area across the patio with a 2-inch PVC pipe to have the hose access under the patio instead of being visible at the home’s exterior. By us doing so, the family can eventually add the screened walls they want in the future; kudos to all for planning ahead and adding convenience at the same time. More importantly, now the hose is not a trip hazard with no obstruction.
