Deck Trends for 2021

Are you considering a new deck for your home this year? Decks in 2021 are not like those even a decade ago.

Archadeck of Kansas City has been a custom deck builder since 2001. We have seen trends come and go. We have also seen deck design trends that have become staples in outdoor living. If you are consdiering building a deck this year, you have many decisions to make about the type of deck you really want. Archadeck of Kansas City is here to help you sort out a few of those important decisions with four deck trends we are seeing in 2021.

Deck TrendsDeck trends of 2021 – is your deck on-trend?

Deck Trend #1 – Building with Premium Decking Materials

Most of the decks that we build are constructed with premium decking. Over the last ten years or so, we have seen a consumer shift from pressure-treated wood and cedar decks to composite deck designs. Premium decking brands, like TimberTech® AZEK, continue to innovate to create decking that has the appearance of real wood, but requires very little maintenance in contrast to a wood deck. The price of wood has purportedly increased more than 180% in the United States over the last year. This means that some composite decking lines are less expensive than pressure-treated wood right now. If you are considering a new deck in 2021, you might find that composite decking is comparable to building a wood deck – so why not upgrade your material? It should also be noted that in addition to less maintenance than wood, composite decking comes with manufacturers’ warranties of 25, 35, and even 50 years!

In addition to premium decking on top of your deck, you might also consider upgrading your deck structure in 2021. Archadeck of Kansas City is currently building some low-maintenance decks with steel deck structures in lieu of wood. Again, you might find that this deck upgrade is worth a little additional cost due to the exorbitant price of treated lumber in 2021.

Deck Trend #2 – Decks Are Expanding

Sometimes bigger is better! Gone are the days of small rectangular decks. Expansive decks in custom shapes are trending in 2021. With the additional time many of us have spent at home during the last year, we have sought to increase the use of our outdoor living spaces. This has equated to building a new and bigger deck for many families. Homeowners are working with Archadeck of Kansas City to custom-design their decks to accommodate optimal usage, like the multi-level deck you see below. Decks in 2021 have a multitude of uses, including grilling, gathering with family, dining, and more.

Deck Trend #3 – Covered Decks

Whether you call them covered porches or covered decks, they are popular choices throughout the Kansas City market. Archadeck of Kansas City specializes in building covered decks, which is uncommon for some deck builders in our area. We are adept in designing and building functional, beautiful roofs for our deck clients. Our covered or partially covered decks and porches offer extended usage, not only because a roof will offer sun and rain protection, but because we can add luxury outdoor comforts, like ceiling fans and radiant heating. If you are worried that your covered porch/deck will be too dark or make the interior of your home too dark, we can add skylights to your porch roof to allow daylight to flow through. Our designers and builders are ready to undertake your dream covered deck project.

Deck Trend #4 – Deck Lighting

Adding lighting to your new deck will offer a beautiful nighttime space for entertaining or relaxing outside your home. More and more homeowners are realizing the value of being able to host dinners on mild evenings or have early morning coffee on their decks – safely and beautifully with a lighted privacy wall, deck stairs, rails, and even rail post caps. Archadeck of Kansas City can customize your deck to include impactful and useful lighting throughout!
