Necessity being the Mother of Invention, this backyard transformation in South Austin, Texas, is one for the books.
The issue was that this family decided to have a swimming pool installed last year. That’s great, so why is that an issue, you ask?

The family had no access to get to the new pool from their home except for walking through mud. That’s bad. Very bad.

As you exit the rear of the home heading to the new swimming pool, we built a U-shaped deck and added a hardscape permeable patio leading the deck to the pool.

Lueders Stone Pairs With Black Star Gravel Sets The Stage For Poolside Patio Perfection
One of the strongest and most beautiful limestones on Earth, Lueders limestone is known for its versatility in all climates due to a higher compression strength than other limestones in Texas.
The stone design parcels were intentionally and meticulously placed amongst the foundation bed of Black Star Gravel. If you’re not familiar with it, Black Star Gravel is made from basalt. Basalt is an extremely functional and durable stone, which is why the possibilities are seemingly endless when it comes to its use, as is evident in Daniel’s design transformation. When Black Star Gravel is dry, it has more of a gray color; however, when wet, it turns black. And, that makes it the ultimate poolside visual accent.
Also, in the spirit of full disclosure, as this backyard oasis improvement is in Austin, the project did have to fall within the WUI codes – Wildland Urban Interface.
The code is intended to proactively take measures to reduce the risk of fire spreading from heavily timbered areas to homes and igniting structures either on the home, attached to the home, or detached.
The City of Austin adopted (and amended) the 2015 International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (WUIC) effective January 1, 2021, and began reviewing permit requests for compliance in April. All new construction must comply with the 2015 WUIC. The code can be reviewed here.
