When these Winston-Salem homeowners initially began their quest for an outdoor living area for their Oak Valley backyard, they had no idea how perfectly the end project would turn out.
We first met with the homeowners while the couple was living in China for a period of five years but with plans to return to the residence full-time in March of 2013. During our first consultation, their existing pressure-treated deck was showing signs of wear and age in that it was splintered and tread worn. The existing deck did not suit their lifestyle and they were looking into developing a master plan for the future of their backyard space to better accommodate their lifestyle and needs.
Along with redesigning a deck to better suit their needs, the couple also had a vision of their existing pergola to be moved further out into the yard. Their vision involved incorporating an open feeling with cascading levels that gently lead you out into the backyard. They also wanted their new outdoor living space to be built using low-maintenance materials so that they could concentrate more on enjoying the backyard as a family and less about upkeep.
Since our initial meeting when we discussed the future expectations of this Oak Valley backyard, a lot has taken place. The homeowners are now living back in Winston-Salem full-time and are enjoying the backyard they always dreamed about with even more amenities than were originally planned. The AZEK composite deck was completed per their request and is built using beautiful low-maintenance AZEK in Murado color with a black powder coated aluminum railing. The homeowners chose to keep the railing to a minimum to keep the cascading flow throughout the design of the space, proof that sometimes less is more! The low-maintenance aluminum pergola anchors the upper level of the deck and serves for both aesthetics and shade as it casts a beautiful pattern of light across the deck adding an ever-changing character to the space.
The homeowners have filled this outdoor oasis with Asian inspired touches through the decor and furnishings.
The deck’s multi-level design serves different functions in this outdoor oasis. The main level serves as the gathering area and holds the tables, chairs and other outdoor furnishings conducive for intimacy and family encounters. The middle level serves as the outdoor kitchen and grilling area which also provides abundant seating for dining as well. The lower level of the deck is the space reserved for the grandmother to sit and watch her grandchildren play, thus flowing out into the yard and effortlessly into the gazebo.
