Winston Salem Deck Gains Usability with a Custom Gazebo

Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad recently built this AZEK deck in the Buena Vista community in Winston Salem. See some of the finer points of the project below!

AZEK is a solid PVC decking board. The benefits of a solid PVC board and provides protection from blistering, peeling, flaking, cracking, splitting, cupping, rotting or structural defects from termites or fungal decay. As you can see in the picture below, the color is beautiful. This particular board is in AZEK’s Morado color, which is a warm chestnut brown. The Morado color looks beautiful with black railing. Another reason black railing is a great choice is because your eye easily passes through it to enjoy the view on the other side. The traditional white fence draws attention to the railing itself and not to what’s on the other side.

As you can see in the photo below, we installed the decking boards in alternating directions. This accomplishes a couple objectives. First, it helps to define an area. Secondly, the width of the deck often exceeds the length of the individual boards. You can see above the board where the two diagonal decking board areas come together. Using this parting board allows us to turn an architectural aesthetic challenge into a design opportunity. Equally as important, this provides visual interest. When you look at the photo, your eye is drawn to the craftsmanship and design of the deck.

In the photo below, you can see how the gazebo is the focal point of this new second story deck. Often we view gazebos as a stand-alone space somewhere out in the yard. Although beautiful, they sometimes aren’t used as much as they should be. By integrating the gazebo into this second-story deck, they have a space that’s functional and beautiful. They can enjoy all the charm and character of a gazebo by integrating it with a deck. In addition, the family can enjoy some covered and uncovered portions of the living space. For example, they can create an eating area on the deck portion and a seating area under the covered portion.
