In the Wildland-Urban Interface, your deck's framing is your last line of defense. If embers bypass the surface or ignite leaf litter below, traditional wood joists act as kindling. To build a truly fire-hardened home in Summit County, you have two primary code-compliant paths:
1. Non-Combustible Steel or Aluminum Framing (The Gold Standard)
Replacing wood with light-gauge steel framing, such as Fortress Evolution, or aluminum framing, such as TimberTech, is the most effective way to ensure WUI compliance.
Total Ignition Resistance: Steel and Aluminum will not ignite, melt, or contribute fuel to a fire. It carries a Class A Fire Rating out of the box.
Precision and Strength: Unlike wood, steel joists stay perfectly flat and won't warp or rot—a massive advantage given Park City’s extreme freeze-thaw cycles and heavy snow loads.
Safety Integration: It provides a stable, non-combustible platform that won't collapse, offering a safer egress route for your family and a more secure staging area for firefighters.
2. Heavy Timber Construction
If you prefer the look of wood, the Utah WUI code allows for Heavy Timber construction, which relies on the "char factor" (large wood members burn slowly on the outside, protecting the structural integrity of the core).
Posts: Must be a minimum of 6" x 6" nominal dimension.
Beams: Must be a minimum of 6" x 8" nominal dimension.
Joists: Must be a minimum of 4" x 8" nominal dimension.
3. Critical Under-Deck Protection
Utah code is particularly strict about the "void" beneath your deck. To prevent embers from nesting:
Enclosures: If your deck is less than 48 inches off the ground, it must be enclosed with 1/8-inch metal mesh screening or other Class A skirting such as Azek TimberTech or Hardie board.
Storage Prohibited: The area under your deck cannot be used to store combustible materials (no firewood piles!).

Why Framing Matters for Your Permit
When you submit your plans for review, the building department looks for a "complete assembly." Combining Steel/Aluminum Framing with a Class A Deck Surface and a Frontline Defense System creates an impenetrable defense.
Peace of Mind: You aren't just building a deck; you're building a fire break for your home.
