What do you call an outdoor living room?

The consensus would probably assert that an indoor living room is a traditional room inside the home with comfortable furnishings and a TV.

But what do you call an outdoor living room? Is it a sunroom or three-season room? Does it perform the same function as an indoor living room? Well, yes…and no. At Archadeck of the Piedmont Triad, we do not believe that an outdoor living room requires walls or screens. It can have those things, but walls, windows, and screens are not mutually exclusive to outdoor living rooms. As for usage – again, an outdoor living room can take on the same function as the indoor variety, but it doesn’t have to.

Let’s define the word, “living.”

“Living” is defined as: the pursuit of a lifestyle of the specified type. Any activity or non-activity that you wish to pursue in your outdoor living room is up to you. Our clients love to bring the many uses of their interior rooms to the areas outside their homes. Take a look at these outdoor living rooms.

A patio can be an outdoor living room.

Just like the covered porch above, this open-air patio is an example of an outdoor living room. This patio living space was created with natural flagstone and a stacked stone fireplace and is a vision of private outdoor relaxation. The patio is a veritable backyard escape, tucked quietly among the natural elements – no walls nor roof to hamper views or disconnect the space from its natural surroundings.

This poolside patio is an outdoor living room too.

This outdoor living space is picture-perfect for poolside dining by the outdoor fireplace. This space is also evidence that an outdoor living room does not require a roof. Instead of a full roof, this outdoor room sits beneath a pergola with a polycarbonate cover, which offers partial sun protection – and the perfect venue for stringing outdoor party lights.
