Williamswood Deck Renovation: Crafting an Outdoor Oasis for Future Enjoyment

The existing deck presented several significant challenges. The old white wooden structure featured outdated materials and had questionable framing that needed immediate replacement. Upon demolition, the team encountered a geological hurdle: the rocky ground made the installation of standard helical piers—a common foundation choice in the HRM— inadvisable. The client needed a proven, durable solution that could overcome the difficult subsoil conditions while delivering a premium finish.
To address the challenge of the rocky subsoil, our team quickly pivoted, installing Bigfoot® Footing Forms. This ensured a stable, reliable foundation where traditional deep-digging methods were impossible, guaranteeing the deck's structural integrity from the ground up. This would also prove helpful structurally, as our client was interested in a future pergola over their new deck. We installed new, thicker posts, providing a substantial, secure, and visually robust foundation for the main structure. The decking was constructed using durable brown pressure-treated wood, ideal for all Nova Scotian weather. It was laid in a modern diagonal pattern, and segmented by a central parting board. This technique creates a custom, high-end look while enhancing the deck's perceived size. To box the deck in, we used pressure-treated railings complemented accompanied with sleek, black aluminum balusters.
This project was marked by exceptional efficiency; despite unexpected rain delays, the renovation was completed almost a month ahead of schedule. Our commitment to quality was evident when some of the initial decking boards were found to be defective. We promptly replaced them with hand-picked boards free of warp or knots, ensuring the final finish was impeccable.
