In the established neighbourhood of Bedford, Nova Scotia, the vision for this property was to transform a standard, aging deck into a sophisticated multi-level retreat. The homeowners sought a high-end sanctuary that prioritized distinct zones for cooking, lounging, and wellness. Our team designed an expansive layout that would maximize the outdoor living potential, while complementing the existing home's architecture.

The project began with the demolition and hauling of the original wooden structure, though we carefully salvaged and utilized the existing deck footings to ensure a solid foundation. During this phase, we proactively identified a significant safety risk in the form of a large rotten tree that threatened both the new deck and the home itself. Our team quickly flagged this issue and coordinated its removal, maintaining a safe worksite and protecting the client's investment from future storm damage.
Technical execution was paramount, particularly regarding the structural reinforcement required for a high-capacity hot tub on the lower deck level. We meticulously framed the substructure with brown pressure-treated lumber, ensuring it met our load management standards for long-term stability. The design also featured complex framing for a multi-level transition that would seamlessly integrate the upper dining area with the lower relaxation zones.
Craftsmanship shone through in the details, such as the decking laid in a diagonal pattern and the sleek black metal balusters. To further enhance the aesthetic, our team proactively pivoted during installation to relocate the hot tub transformer hookups, keeping unsightly electrical components hidden from view. This attention to detail ensured that the architectural lines of the pergolas remained the primary visual focus.
Despite the challenges of Nova Scotia summer heat and frequent rain, the crew executed several critical refinements to improve the final product. We extended the roof over the BBQ area to provide superior weather protection and upgraded the pergola for long-term durability. Additionally, we excavated a dedicated electrical trench through the yard to service a new barrel sauna, ensuring all utilities were safely tucked underground.
The finished product stands as a masterclass in backyard luxury, offering a seamless flow between specialized zones that cater to every aspect of the homeowners' lifestyle. A custom-designed gravel walkway, framed by weather-resistant pressure-treated curbs, leads guests away from the main seating area toward a private cedar barrel sauna nestled in the trees. This wellness circuit is completed by the sunken hot tub, where the surrounding privacy fencing—complete with operable black metal louvres—allows for total seclusion or a gentle breeze at a moment's notice.
