Comprehensive Deck Overhaul: Creating a Private and High-Quality Outdoor Space in the Halifax Area

The original elevated deck presented numerous structural and aesthetic concerns. The existing support posts were too thin, and the bracing was hastily and improperly attached, compromising safety and longevity. Furthermore, the homeowners sought to upgrade their privacy, desiring a less see-through screen on one side of the deck, while also requiring a stronger, newer railing that retained a similar classic style to the original design. The need for a complete structural replacement was clear.

To ensure enduring quality, our team undertook a full reconstruction, replacing everything from the footings to the posts, joists, beams, and stairs. For the foundation, we utilized secure screw pile footings, and presented the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) with all required engineering documents to pass our rigorous inspections, highlighting our commitment to safety and compliance. The new design featured a striking diagonal decking pattern, complemented by a new pressure-treated railing system that incorporated a similar style post cap to seamlessly blend the new structure with the home's aesthetic. Crucially, a new pressure-treated privacy fence was installed to provide the necessary seclusion the clients desired.

Throughout the process, our problem-solving expertise was essential. We faced external delays due to rain and city officials being on site, yet maintained remarkable efficiency. During the initial framing, we had to temporarily remove a portion of the ground-level fence that was obstructing the new structure’s footprint. Later, we discovered that the original concrete stones where the stairs were meant to land were unlevel; we quickly pivoted, removing the inadequate stones and installing new, level patio stones for a safe and clean landing. Finally, our quality control team replaced two pieces of lumber in the new privacy fence that were not up to our standard, ensuring every component was straight and pristine. This meticulous attention to detail allowed us to complete the entire project twenty days ahead of schedule.
