The back of this West Side San Antonio home used to have a flagstone patio that wasn't doing the family any favors. It was small, exposed to the weather, and honestly had lost its spark. The homeowners reached out to Archadeck of San Antonio with a pretty specific list: place to dine outdoors, somewhere to relax with family and friends, and room for the homeowner's pool table.
Tearing Out the Old, Pouring In the New
Demo came first. Our crew ripped out the existing flagstone and cleared the area down to dirt. A new concrete slab was poured as the new foundation for the magic that followed.

Before
Instead of leaving that concrete bare, Archadeck applied a TPC overlay finished in the Roman pattern. Our custom overlay process delivers a textured, stamped topcoat that goes over the poured slab and mimics the look of natural cut stone. Homeowners like it because it gets the visual appeal of flagstone or pavers without the shifting, weeds, and uneven surfaces that can come with the real thing over time.

After
Covered on One Side, Screened on the Other
Once the floor was down, the structure itself went up. The design features a combined covered patio and screened porch built as a single space off the back of the home. One end stays open-air, so it still feels connected to the yard. The other end is fully screened in, which in San Antonio basically means you can actually sit outside after the sun goes down without getting eaten alive by mosquitoes.
For the screens, Archadeck of San Antonio used the ScreenEze system instead of a typical aluminum frame system. This system allows for spanning wider openings with fewer posts to break up the view, and it's noticeably more durable than standard screening — it doesn't sag or tear the way older screening systems tend to after a few hot Texas summers.

Fitting Dining, Lounging, and a Pool Table Into One Room
This is where the layout of this project got interesting. The space needed to serve variable uses, of dining, relaxing, and entertaining without it feeling like a furniture showroom. The dining area sits at one end with enough room to pull chairs out. A separate lounge area sits apart from that, so it doesn't double as a hallway every time someone walks through for dinner. And with the pool table in the middle, there is enough clearance around it to take a real shot — not crammed in a corner where you're hitting the wall with your cue.

A custom cedar TV wall was custom built into one side of the room, designed and constructed to match the custom cedar doors leading into the space. Along the wall there's also a cedar drink rail, which sounds like a small detail but turns out to get used constantly — somewhere to set a drink down while watching the game or waiting your turn at the table.
Tying the Exterior Together
Outside, the knee wall and siding are Hardie board, which holds up well against San Antonio's heat and humidity and doesn't need the upkeep wood siding does. Archadeck’s mason wrapped stone detailing around the base of the posts to match the architectural style of the home, so the addition doesn't read as an afterthought. It looks like it was always there, which is part of the appeal that makes our custom outdoor living space designs so desirable.

How the Family Actually Uses It Now
This is the part that matters most. The dining area gets used regularly, not just on weekends or for company. The screened in space has become where the family winds down most evenings. And the pool table — which also works as a dining table in a pinch — gets used almost nightly. The homeowners mentioned that their kids are out there constantly playing pool, which is exactly the kind of feedback that makes a project like this worth it.
A lot of outdoor living projects end up looking nice in photos but don't fit how a family lives day to day. This one was built around three very specific, very different needs, and the result is a space that gets used for all three almost every single day.
