Technically speaking, Hill Country pavilions and patio covers serve the same purpose – providing much-needed shelter from hot Texas sun.
Structurally and aesthetically, patio covers and pavilions are also very similar. It’s how, and perhaps where they are built that sets these two outdoor structures apart. Patio covers, like porches, are technically attached to homes. Pavilions are standalone structures, many times here in the San Antonio area, accompanying a backyard pool. Both patio covers and pavilions can be chock-full of outdoor living amenities, like outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, lighting, fans, and even installed heating. So, how do you know which is right for your home?

There is no incorrect way to enjoy your backyard – only the best way for your specific needs. If you have a pool or just a large backyard, which you want to be able to access in full sun, light rain, or just about any season – a standalone pavilion could fulfill those needs. Our Hill Country pavilions are beautiful structures indeed, but they are so much more than beautiful. If you wish to enjoy an outdoor movie night or host poolside dinner parties, a new Archadeck pavilion will provide that and more. You can have all this and more with a backyard patio cover too, situated right outside your back door for easy access and ultimate usability. What’s more, if your home and outdoor lifestyle needs can accommodate two structures – you can have a patio cover attached to the back of your home and a pavilion beyond your back door!

And you know what else? It doesn’t matter much if you consider pavilions, porches, and patio covers to be exactly the same thing – we build them all!
Is a Pergola a Patio Cover?
A patio cover can be a roof, but it can also be a pergola. Pergolas can be built with louvers or solid covers but typically allow at least some sunlight to flow through. Pergolas can be used in place of a porch roof, patio roof, or even a pavilion. Additionally, pergolas can be used for shade on a deck.

Often, it is believed that pergolas are less expensive to build than roofs, but depending on the materials, size, and intricacy of the design, a pergola can be a sizable investment. Additionally, we must also remember that a wooden pergola will require the future investment of time and money to maintain it, whereas a roof should be virtually maintenance free.
