In a technical sense, one could argue that a screened-in patio is a ground-level space with a concrete or paver floor and screened walls; and a screened-in porch is a raised surface with decking for a floor.
However, Archadeck of San Antonio Hill Country knows that in the real world, folks often use these outdoor living terms synonymously. Here in Hill Country, screened patios are also referred to as sunrooms. And we say, “Tomato, tomahto!” Additionally, whether you call it a screened-in patio or screened-in porch, we can design and build it for you. Are there other outdoor living spaces that are used in the same way?

Covered Porches vs. Covered Patios – and More!
Local vernacular dictates this versus that when it comes to naming outdoor living spaces. Covered spaces are often used interchangeably. Not only are covered porches and covered patios considered equivalents, but covered porches are also often referred to as open porches and covered decks.

Porches, patio covers, and pavilions can also be considered one and the same, referring to the roof structure that is built atop a patio surface. These spaces are very popular in Hill Country, and we design highly customized pavilions, porches, and patio covers. These backyard spaces not only function as much-needed sun protection, but we often build them with TV walls, outdoor fireplaces, and full outdoor kitchens.

What About Decks and Patios?
Decks and patios are actually quite different in make-up, even though many serve the same purpose or function. Decks are simply outdoor living structures that are built on a frame with decking boards for flooring. Decks can be covered, open, or partially covered and partially open. Patios can also be covered or partially covered, but unlike decks, patios have pavers, natural stone, or concrete floors. Patios can re raised, but are more often directly on the ground. Decks can be low to the ground, but are very often raised, or built to be multi-story outdoor spaces.
